THEATRE PECKHAM URGES GOVERNMENT TO INVEST IN ‘HYPER-LOCAL’ VENUES

The Stage

Theatre Peckham is calling on the government to support “hyper-local” theatres, which have limited resources and whose importance, the venue claims, is not always understood.

A new manifesto released by the south London theatre claims that smaller local venues can fall through gaps between different policy areas because their work spans both professional theatre, training and youth support.

To coincide with its 40th anniversary, Theatre Peckham is demanding multi-year funding for hyper-local theatres to cover their artist development work, pastoral and safeguarding support and access costs.

It made its plea at an event before MPs in parliament on 10th September.

“Theatres such as Theatre Peckham already provide part of the solution to challenges the government wants to address,” the manifesto, entitled Building Belonging, reads.

“They contribute to youth opportunity, skills, confidence, community connection and a more inclusive creative economy. They should be understood and funded as both cultural organisations and part of the social infrastructure of their communities.”
